Chiropractic Washington DC Importance of staying hydrated

Are you drinking enough water? Drinking water is one of the most important things you can do for your body everyday. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. Most of us are used to being dehydrated in Washington DC that we no longer recognize the normal signs of thirst. We cannot go more than two or three days without water, although we can go weeks without food. The human body is about 60% water, your muscles and brain are about 75% water, your blood is about 82% water, and your bones are about 25% water. Water is required to regulate our body to have the capability to do its daily tasks.

Dehydration In Washington DC

When our body is dehydrated, it doesn't work as efficiently. Dehydration can lead to many conditions such as headache, back pain, short-term memory, difficulty focusing, kidney stones, bladder infections, dry skin and constipation. It is also the number one trigger for daytime fatigue.

Most Americans drink their daily fluid in the form of sugary carbonated beverages, coffee, juice, or tea. While these do contain water, they also contain substances that cause dehydration such as sugar and caffeine. Alcohol is even worse when it comes to dehydration. This is why it is recommended to drink one glass of water for every drink that you consume.

How much should you drink? Researchers at the Mayo Clinic recommend a little more than 8 cups for the average individual. Many people try to get at least eight 8-ounce glasses daily, as a rule of thumb. You should take into consideration size and activity level, if you are of bigger stature or are very active you will need to drink more. The Institute of Medicine advises that men consume roughly 3 liters (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day, while women consume 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day.

If you don't like drinking water on its own, then try sprucing it up with some lemon juice or mix in some fruit juice to give it a little flavor. Just make sure to carry a water bottle with you wherever you go and you will more then likely stay hydrated throughout the rest of your day.
